Department of Oriental Philology was founded 1971 with the establishment of Philosophy Department. The founders of the Department of Oriental Philology are aware that in Bosnia and Herzegovina is not, nor can it be what is Oriental in Western Europe Countries like Germany, France, Italy, Sweden, Poland. The Bosnia in Herzogovina Oriental Study Programm seen in close connection with their own history. This meant for the faculty the need to invest multiple efforts to facilitate the study of oriental languages and literature, formed as teaching staff and also enabled staff to be ready to engage in research of oriental languages and literature, general and cultural history of the peoples of Bosnia and Herzegovina at the time Ottoman ruled in Bosnia, in which the oriental-Islamic component remained permanently and is an essential element of national identity.
The University of Sarajevo (Bosnian: Univerzitet u Sarajevu) is the first university in Bosnia and Herzegovina, originally established in 1531 as an Islamic law college, with the modern university being established in 1940. At the beginning of the aggression (1992-1995) there was a substantial leak on the department staff, which remained that without Professor and without a majority of young associates.
Turkish and Arabic Study Programm:
Today the University of Sarajevo offers the most developed program in Turkish studies in the Balkans. Students can learn Turkish at all levels and take a variety of courses on Turkey, the Ottoman Empire and Near East Asia. Study "A" discipline deal with with Arabic or Turkish literature and history, while Study "B" focus on the language with Arabic or Turkish literature. The Study “C” focues the subject of Persian language and the compulsory general subjects, there was the Ottoman diplomatics paleography
