The Department of Uygur, Kazak and Kirgiz Language & Culture is located in Zhongguan- muc, the western suburbs of Beijing, with National Library of China in its south.
The Department of Uygur Language & Culture was founded 2004, the first department across China and the world at large to be named with Uygur language and culture. As one of the earliest subjects offered by the Central University for Nationalities (former Central College for Nationalities), Uygur Language & Culture was set up in 1951 and, the second year, merged with the faculty and students of Uygur Language from the Department of Oriental Languages of Beijing University, which altogether was affiliated with the Department of Ethnic Language & Culture of the Central College for Nationalities.
Students at the Menzu University continue to learn in the field of modern Kazakh linguistics, Turki linguistics, ancient Turkic philology, Kazakh language history, Kazakh literature, Turkish folk literature, ancient Turkic-Uighur and West-Central Asia literature, Central Asian nation language and culture, linguistics and applied linguistics, ethnology, folklore, philology, etc.. As a national education center of liberal arts under the Ministry of Education, we select 5 students out of each class to form the key classes and give them special professional training and the privilege of a "unified bachelor’s and master’s program".
International academic exchanges are active in Uygur language & literature. For the past half-century, eighteen teachers were or are invited to work, give lectures, study and participate in academic meetings in such countries as the USA, Germany, Japan, Turkey, Austria, Holland, Egypt, Iraq, Russia, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan.
