Xinjiang Normal University is located in Urumqi , the capital of Xinjiang, near the Chinese portion of the ancient Silk Road and at the foot of the northern Tianshan Mountains . As a key University of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, it is famous for its pedagogical and comprehensive education, ethnic diversity and regional distinctiveness.
The Xinjiang university was founded in 1924 and is located in the southern part of Urumqi City. The University has research institutions in these 8 areas of study: economics, arid ecology, math theory, demography, applied chemistry, Central Asia culture, Altaic study and architectural design.
The University of Xinjiang, the Normal University of Xinjiang both have chairs for Uighur and Kazakh languages and literatures. Uighur and Kazakh Studies are also pursued in the Kashgar Pedagogical College ( in Kashgar) and in the Ili Pedagogical College (in Ining-Kuldja).
Besides Beijing and Xinjiang, Turcology is represented also in the West-Northern Nationality Institute in Lanzhou ( the capital city of Gansu provice) and in the Nationality Institute in Xining (the capital city of Qinghai province), at which institutes Yughur and Salar are studied. Recently a new Centre for Nationality Studies (including Turcological Studies) was established in the Shaanxi Normal University ( in Xi'an-the capital city of Shaanxi province).
