- Islamic Studies
The Institute for Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies within the School of Government and International Affairs is at the forefront of Middle Eastern studies, teaching and research in Britain. The foundation of this is Durham University's long legacy of teaching Islamic studies and social scientific studies of the region. They are the only Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC)-recognised Middle East and Islamic studies department in the country, which means that they offer the highest level of research training and subject-specific supervision and teaching.
They are a multidisciplinary department and our staff combine a wide range of skills and knowledge of languages and the economy, politics, history and culture of the Middle East region. They maintain links with many institutions both in the Middle East and worldwide and have a distinguished list of Honorary Fellows. Their multidisciplinary nature is reinforced by close collaboration with other departments in Durham University that have Middle Eastern expertise.
On these web pages you will find information about the Institute, postgraduate programmes within the School of Government and International Affairs, staff research and publications, as well as links to other major Middle Eastern resources.
